There is nothing like a hot bowl of chili on a cold night. I especially like it when it’s been simmering in the crock pot all day since it’s doing all the work itself! Olde Westport Spice and Trading Co. sent a package of their Championship Chili Spice Blend. I am not lying when I say that this is the easiest and tastiest chili I’ve ever ‘made!’
My husband is on a low carb diet and sometimes that and the Paleo diet go hand in hand. The Paleo Chef By Pete Evans is not one of those times. However, I’m not going to denigrate the book based on that statement alone.
I love the photography in the cookbook and the recipes sound absolutely amazing. However, most of these ingredients would require a special (not to mention costly) trip to the store for us. Plus, having two young children on top of that, I can’t see The Paleo Chef keeping a permanent place in our family meal plan.
While the recipes are visually beautiful and seem relatively painless to make, I just can’t get past all the extra ingredients that I would be forced to purchase. I’ve heard that you can do the Paleo diet on a budget and I am in no way knocking the diet or Mr. Evans’ cooking for the matter. It’s just doesn’t work for my family.
Recipes like Grilled Wild Salmon, Raw Zucchini Lasagna, and Lamb Meatballs grace the pages and if I had a bigger food budget, I would definitely go for it! I liked how he added a little introduction about each recipe as well. So, all in all, a beautifully done cookbook. Not for the budget conscious though.

Did you enjoy the different uses for baking soda? Well, as a second installment, I decided to list some uses for white vinegar, baking soda’s older brother. I say this because they go together a lot and their relationship is usually explosive. As you can see, we always buy it in bulk! White vinegar, while sometimes smelly, really gets the job done. Here’s ten ways how!
Don’t you just love a product that you can buy and use for practically everything? My family does and that gave me an idea to start a series called “10 Uses For.” Each time, I’ll choose something that does double duty around your home while also saving you money! I decided to start with baking soda since it’s so versatile.
I love collecting cookbooks and I have a ton of them. Some of my favorite cookbooks are ones that are modeled after a TV show or a book series. My sister loves the show, Portlandia, so when The Portlandia Cookbook: Cook Like A Local came out, I jumped at the chance to review it!
I love using spice blends when cooking. They make dinner interesting. Olde Westport Spice & Trading Company is a 33-year-old spice manufacturer that is still going strong. This online company operates a small plant in Goodland, Kansas, and claims to know a thing or two about spices, seasonings and soups. This family owned and operated company was originally founded in the Kansas City area and has stayed true to its mission of making custom spice blends for main meal dishes and appetizers as well as nearly 20 varieties of dry soups.
