One thing I really can’t give up is my dishwasher. We have two young kids and we use that thing like crazy. I throw just about everything in there too. I sanitize our toothbrushes, clean sponges, you name it, I’ve tried washing it in dishwasher. I try to use everything to my advantage, dishwasher included. Those liquid detergents really add up though. Even with coupons, I can’t get the cost as low as I would like. I was reading our local newspaper the other day and I came across a recipe for homemade dishwasher detergent. I had most of the ingredients so I decided to give it a go! It was so easy to make and you only need a tablespoon of mix each time! I’m hooked. I really don’t notice a difference between this and the expensive stuff either! It’s so much cheaper to make and it’s non-toxic! I really hope you give it a try.
Homemade Dishwasher Detergent
1 cup Borax (This and the washing soda is found in the laundry aisle)
1 cup Washing Soda (this is the same stuff you use in the homemade laundry detergent)
1/2 cup Kosher Salt (it’s course and helps scrub! I found this at the dollar store)
1/4 cup citric acid (5-6 unsweetened lemonade packets work)
Mix everything together and store in a plastic container (as my cute assistant is modeling below). I have a special set of measuring spoons and cups just for my projects. This way, I don’t use my food measuring cups and I can leave a Tablespoon in the container! You might have to adjust the amount you use, depending on the hardness of your water. I was ok with 1 tablespoon per load. Also, I’ve been using white vinegar as my rinsing agent for years now! This recipe made a large amount and I am really pleased with it.
Which dishwasher detergent do you use? Are you willing to make the switch? Enjoy!
