My interview with The Cake Boss!
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing TV’s Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro. He was such a great guy and so open to answering my questions.
I really enjoyed the entire event, which was a cake fundraiser in Philadelphia, but more on that later. Valastro became famous when he hosted his reality TV show, Cake Boss, and later went on to host Next Great Baker, among others. He owns Carlo’s Bakery, along with his family in New Jersey. Since his breakout fame, the bakery has branched out, with over 10 other locations.
Look at this photo! We look like we’ve known each other for years! Anyway, when I sat down to “butter him up” (I couldn’t resist), here is what he had to say. This interview was taken in 2015, so it might not hold up to any events taking place from then to the present.
1. What was your fave dessert when you were a kid? What is your favorite dessert now?
Buddy Valastro:”Ever since I was a young boy, my father taught me to always try everything I bake to check the flavor and the quality. As a kid I loved trying all the different pastries we had at the bakery! It makes me so happy to now watch my kids enjoying everything we make at Carlo’s Bakery, especially our chocolate chip cookies. I still love all the classic pastries, but there is nothing that beats a fresh lobster tail!”
2. What is it like working with your family on a daily basis?
BV: “I grew up working with my family so it feels natural to me! Sometimes my family drives me a little crazy, but there is no one in the world I trust more to run my business.”
3. Is it hard to juggle your TV career with your business?
BV: “It does get a little crazy juggling my business and my TV career. Sometimes I feel like I need 50 extra hours in my day! Honestly what is most important to me is being a husband and a father. My family and the bakery business will always come first.”
4.What do you do in order to relax?
BV: “This may sound funny, but there is nothing more relaxing to me than working on cakes. Once I get into the zone cake decorating, I don’t have to think about anything else. It’s just me and the cake. It is so satisfying to step back from a cake, after working for hours and see the masterpiece that you have created.”
5. Do you cook for your family?
BV: “I’m a lucky guy. My wife is an outstanding cook! For the most part, she does most of the cooking but when I do get into the kitchen, I love it! I’d like to think I am a better good cook myself.
6. How long does it take to film Next Great Baker?
BV: “We film Next Great Baker for two months! I love filming Next Great Baker. It is so much fun for me to think of new challenges for the competitors! They really work hard in those two months but you gotta work hard to keep up with my employees at Carlo’s Bakery!”
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and interviewing Mr. Valastro. He was very down to earth and family-oriented. I hope this ‘sweetened’ your day!?? (I’ll stop now).
Who would you want to interview and what would you ask him/her?
